ABOUT GFGM

gastronomy
ɡaˈstrɒnəmi/
noun
  1. the practice or art of choosing, cooking, and eating good food.

Good Food, Good Mood was established after I realised how often I was asking myself the difficult question of "Where and what should we eat today?". The Melbourne food scene truly makes us spoilt for choice, so I am hoping my honest reviews can act as a guide for any occasion - from cheap eats to fine dining, to burgers and pizza on cheat days, to fresh and healthy on cutting days. Recommendations on places to try and review are always welcome, just leave a comment.

All photos are taken with my Samsung Note 4 or Sony NEX-F3 unless stated otherwise. Thanks for dropping by!

P.S. Shoutout to my friends and family who dine with me - thanks for not picking up your cutlery when the food comes out so I can take all my food photos... y'all know my camera eats first haha.

Jus Burger

Sundays are best spent lazing around, going to the market, or spending quality time with your family. My Sunday was spent at at sneaker freaker meet, hosted and organised by a friend from work. It was located where the South Yarra Sunday market was, that little warehouse in Oaks Place off Chapel Street. The sun was shining, everyone was looking so, so fine, and the day was simply splendid. To top it off, the three work amigos finally ate at Jus Burgers. I didn't take many photos, which is a shame, but there will definitely be another visit! There's a sign outside that says it's the "best burger, as voted by Foxtel", but it seems to me that Foxtel has yet to live. Their point is invalid.

Jus Burgers, however, had already opened several stores in WA. They blessed our Melbourne foodie streets with some delectable burgers. It is very riveting knowing that the food culture is being more embraced this year. It's a great thing for our stomachs and tastebuds, but not so great for the back pocket.

Fi ordered a simple, but delicious 'original beef' burger ($10)
It wasn't messy, and the beef was deliciously fresh.
I ordered 'the mullet' ($14), because I do love business in the front and party in the back.
Just kidding, I love anything with bacon and egg and beetroot in it, it has seriously got to be my most favourite burger combination. If it has pineapple, EVEN BETTER, because I love pineapple.
I'm not going to lie, I did my enjoy my experience at Huxtaburger a lot better, the bun is a lot softer and more enjoyable to eat. The mullet is extremely difficult to manage, with bits and pieces falling out all over my plate. Surely eating a burger should not be such tedious work...

I don't want to gross you out, but there is also a kangaroo meat burger on the menu! I was a bit skeptical to try it at first, but I know I will one day. Apparently it's a healthy alternative, as it is high in protein and low in fat!!! Win. It almost feels illegal to eat a nationally recognised animal. It's like eating a koala... You just dun do dat.
^ Onion Rings, $5.50
I hate onions but I guess onion rings are okay. I just wished we ordered fries instead. And as you can see from the cow, that's how we were served. There were no table numbers or names, just an animal instead. Creative, hey?

Overall, I would probably rate Jus Burger's an 8/10. There was fast service, limited outdoor seating, and they are open until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays. Yep, you heard correctly. So when you're having a massive night out and you're getting the munchies, forget about McDonald's and tell your cabbie to take you to Jus Burger's.

Huxtaburger Restaurant

Going to uni in the city has major pros and cons. A pro, as I have probably mentioned in an earlier post, is having Brunswick Street and Smith Street on either side of our campus. So. Much. Win.

Huxtaburger is a short walk from our uni, so I was grateful to finally give the popular place a visit. Melbourne was blessed with sunny weather today, a rare sight these days. Every one was sitting outside, soaking up the sunshine and patiently waiting for the burgers. Huxtaburger do not use table numbers, instead they call out the order by name. Boost Juice also uses this system, and I hate it when someone calls out my name (as Lisa is so freaking common), and I get my hopes up thinking that my green tea mango mantra is ready, when it is not.

^ playing around with photo booth and the business card
^ uni buddies wearing our sunnies because the weather was hot like a sunrise
I am obviously somewhat retarded and did not make it into the shot.
^ Bill's Burger ($10.50) with Huxtaburger burger ($8.5) in the background.

Look at the size difference between the two burgers. The bun was nice and soft, the egg was cooked to perfection, the fries were crisp and judging from my description, let's just say this burger was perfection. The large crinkle cup size wasn't as big as I thought it would be, but at the small price of $3 you really can't complain. This is one of the best burgers that I've ever eaten, and I've eaten A LOT OF BURGERS IN MY LIFE TIME. So the next time you think about going to McDonald's for a burger that is loaded full of crap, take the take and head out to Huxtaburger for a fresh tasting, stomach smiling, tastebud partying type burger.

Fortunately you were not there to witness me eating this bad boy, because it was a big wrestle. Jenny gave me the advice of eating the burger backwards so that the fillings don't fall out. IT WORKS. YOU MUST TRY IT. Also, I probably shouldn't be disclosing this information on my blog, but those who know the area will know that it doesn't populate the most educated and proper citizens of Melbourne. This fair dinkum Aussie couple (I am in no way being racist towards them, but that's what they were) walked past Huxtaburger just YELLING at each other. Well, it was mostly the male yelling at the pregnant female, crudely shouting "You're 6 months pregnant and all you care about is heroin. That's my baby. You don't even care about it, only care about shooting up. Blah blah blah". A wave of shock and :| faces just hit the patrons of Huxtaburger that day. When they walked past, all of us were just laughing in shock at what just happened. I hope that baby will be okay.

Mocha Jo's

Mocha Jo's is a great place for catching up with coffee and has an extensive yet delicious menu ranging from entree options to mains. Located on Kingsway (Glen Waverley), it's worth the travel because the coffee is so effin good! There is Zest 89 across the road but the coffee there is pretty bad tbh. I couldn't find any more images that I've taken at Mocha's on iPhoto (I really should clean out my folders) but the ones below show the type of servings that you would expect. The chips have always been fresh, and I guess it's safe to say that I have never been disappointed with my meal, ever. I am a food snob so that's a pretty big deal.

The waiters/waitresses are really sweet, but they will constantly pester you and ask you if you want any more drinks which is rather annoying. Be sure to make a booking if you're intended to dine at night because it's always busy.

^ calamari as a main and a chicken burger which was super delicious.
^ trio of dips and wedges hellz yes
^ lunch with my girls some time ago, wedges and calamari salad for four people
^ salmon with asparagus, sweet potato mash, eggplant paste and chili... damn the chili
^ a really rich sticky date pudding that i did not enjoy one bit
^ i love cheesecake with honeydew green tea mhhhmmm

Misty's Diner

American Food. We all know about it. Greasy. Big portioned. Epic Meal Time. Mystical. Why did I use the word 'mystical'? Because today I will be sharing my wonderful experience at Misty's Diner... and this place is nothing short of mystical. The interior is an unquestionable replica of a real American diner. The only thing that was missing was that the waiter girls weren't on rollerskates, boo you whore. This didn't change the fact that this restaurant, hidden away in the streets of Prahan, holds a menu so amazing that I just have to share it! Considering we don't have many diners around Melbourne, this place is a lot better than Soda Rock on Chapel Street. Zooey Deschanel couldn't have said it any better, I love food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love her as well.

I don't know why the photos are so blue but don't h8.

As you can see from the images, we ordered a burger with chili fries that were fortunately NOT too chili because I cannot tolerate the intensity of spicy food. I did the rookie mistake of ordering a big breakfast, but when you are so overwhelmed by the menu, you do some silly things. The waffles were delicious but I wish there was maple syrup to eat it with. There were other meals I would have preferred to indulge in, but I guess it gives me an excuse to simply go back! Misty's Diner also stocks a vast selection of American beverages and American lollies and pop tarts et cetera. Misty's Diner closes at around 10pm but this place would be the best destination to eat at after a big (read messy) night out.

Take me back to America! I miss it so much.
My family. The lifestyle. The food. The shopping.
