ABOUT GFGM

gastronomy

noun
  1. the practice or art of choosing, cooking, and eating good food.

Good Food, Good Mood was established after I realised how often I was asking myself the difficult question of "Where and what should we eat today?". The Melbourne food scene truly makes us spoilt for choice, so I am hoping my honest reviews can act as a guide for any occasion - from cheap eats to fine dining, to burgers and pizza on cheat days, to fresh and healthy on cutting days. Recommendations on places to try and review are always welcome, just leave a comment.

All photos are taken with my Samsung Note 4 or Sony NEX-F3 unless stated otherwise. Thanks for dropping by!

P.S. Shoutout to my friends and family who dine with me - thanks for not picking up your cutlery when the food comes out so I can take all my food photos... y'all know my camera eats first haha.

Wong's Lucky Bar

Sunday morning... rain is falling.
Sunday night... rain is still freaking falling.

Heading to Box Hill was seriously one of the scariest driving conditions that I have ever been under. Panicing between which speed to put my windscreen wipers on, making sure that I have enough time to brake behind cars, changing songs to fit the rainy mood and driving when rain is constantly being pissed down on you is a hugeeeeeeeeeee tackle.

But hey, I made it... and I'm ecstatic that I did. Wong's Lucky Bar is this tiny little restaurant next to the tram stop on Whitehorse Road. There is no menu on Urbanspoon, so I took the liberty of saving you some time and uploading the menu (the only important menu anyway). There were four hungry hippos on Sunday night, and paying $25 for a very decent meal was just excellent. How can you resist the delicious taste of pork riDs with peking sauce (refer to the menu below... I love Asians).

If you're going to check in on Foursquare (not that anyone uses that anyways) or on Instagram, it will say Wang's Lucky Bar. The only lucky bar for wangs that you will be getting is located in St Kilda. There is an error, it's actually Wong's! So they are so wong. (punny).

The sweet hospitality and service that was given from Wong's Lucky Bar deserved a thumbs up. The only bad thing about the place was that it was wayyyyyy too small. The table was not long enough to fit our king sized banquet, but we somehow managed. All the food came all out at once which was overwhelming. As if driving in the rain wasn't bad enough, I then had to decide which dish I would start off first (damn these first world problems). Below are all the images of all the dishes that you are served for the small price of $98. Next time, I am definitely getting the lobster! I love lobster!!! Everything that was served was at perfect temperature, so you know it is made relatively fresh and the food wasn't just reheated. My personal favourite was the haianese chicken (that's a given) andddddd the mud crab!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Customs would suggest that you begin with the Shark Fin Soup. If you're put off by the fact that it is shark fin, don't fret. You'll probably enjoy it more than you think you would. It has a sweet taste but is not chunky. There was no vinegar but the soup alone was flavoursome. My mum makes a better shark fin soup though, just sayin.

^ Haianese chicken.
I could never complain about this. It is just one of the most perfect forms of chicken, second to fried chicken of course.
^ sea cucumber, mushrooms and vegetables (big pieces of lettuce).
I love mushrooms but the sea cucumber was pretty off putting. I've never eaten it before and it's pretty bad of a foodie like myself to not try it. But I just could not bring myself to eating it. We tried to swap the dish for another veggie one but unfortunately it's bound to the banquet.
^ le pork rids with peking sauce
This dish had the right level of sweetness and was even served with pineapples. I loveeee pineapples! The meat pieces were boney so I had to be extra careful when I ate it.
^ all of the dishes.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST: THE DELICIOUS MUD CRAB WITH EGG NOOODOOOOOO YAYAYAYAY
Mud Crab and Lobster is considered a delicacy. It seriously made me feel a lot better, considering rain just makes you feel lazy and groggy.

Casa Bella Cafe & Restaurant

Long awaited catch ups are always THEE best. The passing around of food. Sharing stories that we've missed out on. Getting abs from laughing too much... This Friday afternoon was spent with my high school sweethearts. It's a rare occasion when we catch up, but when we do, it is always memorable and full of hilarity. Of course, there was food included... and A LOT of it. (back in high school, we used to bring a shit load of food for lunch and everyone always thought we had a birthday in our group or something but in reality we just had a lot of food to share with one another... embarra as).

Casa Bella Cafe & Restaurant is located near the movie side of Northland. The food range at Northland is pretty crap compared to Highpoint, which has everything at their disposal - Seared, Grill'd, Nando's, San Churro's, La Porchetta, Bubble Cup among other things. We have Casa Bella, Secret Recipe and Pancake Parlour. Lame.

Fortunately breakfast was served until 4pm. I ordered eggs benedict and was delighted by the presentation and colours, but disappointed by the taste of the hollandaise sauce. For one, they didn't give me a satisfactory amount of sauce and secondly, the taste wasn't sweet at all. It's pretty obvious that I have a sweet tooth, but the flavour of the sauce wasn't rich enough for me. On the flip side, the poached eggs were perf. It's a good place to hang out for coffee, and would fit hundreds of people in the indoor and outdoor areas so you'll never have to wait long. The waiter who served us while we were paying was very pushy and rude. I ain't tippin you nuttin wit dat attitude.

I guess I would rate it a 8/10 in terms of pricing of the food and the delectable taste. It's the only thing Northland has got going for them.

Gold Leaf, Docklands

Hi everyone.
Sorry for the blogging hiatus!!!
I've been extremely busy with uni and work, so my mind is all over the place.
I have so many pending posts that I need to complete and share with you all, but to begin, I'll start with Gold Leaf in Docklands. My first time there was last January for a friend's 18th birthday. She had a banquet with all of her closest friends, and the food and service was devine. I know I've already written a blog post about Gold Leaf, but each one offers a different experience. I recently went to Gold Leaf in Burwood and it left me walking out feeling disappointed and losing faith in yumcha. The best GL Restaurant would have to be in Sunshine. Exceptional hospitality from the waiters, delicious variety of foods and defs worth the travel.

It's been a week since the asean ball. Time flies!!! Where does it go???
The day after the big night, we all went to the Gold Leaf in Docklands to tingle our taste buds with Yum Cha. Considering we didn't have a lot to eat on the night of Asean Ball...................................... we were all prettttttttttty hungry the next day. We paid $110 to eat bread, dip, dry chicken and Cacao Green froyo which I didn't even receive *shakes fist*

^ View from Crown Promenade taken with a miniature setting.
^ Table 25 right next to the dance floor
^ Main - chicken that wasn't even worth taking in a nice angle.

Reasons why Gold Leaf Docklands was better than Gold Leaf Burwood:
1. It's relatively bigger with nice interior
2. The waiters at Docklands are not rude
3. The food was NOT COLD. When we ordered Ha Cheung (the rice rolls with prawns and sweet soya sauce) at Burwood it was COLD. It is my favourite dish ever since I was young. To order ha cheung and have it served cold is a disgrace to yumcha and what it stands for.
4. It seemed as though GL Burwood were serving anything they could make out of the spare ingredients they had in their kitchen. I commend the chefs for trying to be creative, but serving mini burgers (which when I observed, no one wanted) does not comply with yum cha standards (imo). Just stick to making dericious dumprings and standard yumcha food.
5. Docklands has better dumplings. What makes a good har gow dumpring? One that does not crumble when you try to pick it up. Even if you are incapable of using chopsticks, the skin should not tear apart or else that is an indication that it has been out for too long.

^ Are you a fan of chicken feet? Cos I surely am not!
^ chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, ha cheung and random bits and pieces of dumprings and pork ribs
^ yeyeye mango pudding baybeh

Bimbo Deluxe

No one likes a bimbo, especially if they are unattractive and dull. Bimbo Deluxe is far from unattractive, and most definitely far from dull. Walking into the building on the corner of Rose/Brunswick Street, you suddenly feel as though you have stepped into a dark pizza dungeon, with naked doll babies hanging, comfy couches and awesome music. Walk upstairs for the rooftop area, where you will find pretty lamps hanging from the ceiling. But wait, there's more. Bimbo's offers $4 pizza for 4 hours on weekdays fwom 12pm-4pm. Yes, you read correctly. CHEAP EAT ALERT$! FOUR DORRAR PIZZAS.

Be careful with which pizza you pick because the flavours are wacky but are so delicious nonetheless. If you are a fan of thin crust pizzas, then Bimbo's is your place to eat. My personal favourite is Caesar, Agnello and Organico. They also have a limited range of dessert pizzas which are small, but hit the sugar spot. Bimbo's Deluxe isn't the only one. Chapel Street have been graced with "Lucky Coq" which is pretty much the same thing with a different name. Whether you're bargain hunting on Brunswick Street or luxuriously shopping on Chapel Street, be sure to stop in for some pizza!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UNFORTUNATELY these are the only photos I could find, and also taken my crappy iPhone quality. I know I always complain about using my phone but that's purely my fault for not bringing my camera everywhere with me. Perhaps if I stopped eating out so regularly I could actually save up for a craycray camera that is better than my Canon point and shoot. Any suggestions on which camera I should buy???
